Your candle care questions, answered
Our commitment to quality, from Australian-sourced soy wax to the highest percentage of fragrance oils, means your Mystique By Lina candle is designed for an exceptional experience. Follow these essential tips to enjoy a clean, long-lasting, and beautifully scented burn every time.
What are the most important things for a perfect burn?
For your Mystique By Lina candle, the first burn is crucial: no need to trim the wick initially. Let it burn until the melted wax reaches the edges of the jar (a full 'melt pool'), which can take up to 4 hours depending on the size. Always snuff out your candle with a snuffer to prevent black soot, and never use the lid to extinguish the flame. Before each relight, trim your wick to prevent 'mushrooming' and excessive soot. Always place your candle on a heat-resistant surface, away from draughts. Never burn for more than 4-5 hours and always keep an eye on a burning candle.
Are there any special tricks for soy candle care?
Yes, to keep your soy candle at its best: always ensure your wick is trimmed to 5mm before each burn. If your candle comes with a lid, pop it on when not in use. This protects the wax from dust and helps keep its crisp, white appearance, preserving the fragrance until your next burn.
How should I store my Mystique By Lina candles?
To maintain the integrity of your candle’s fragrance and wax colour, store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or harsh artificial light. Extreme temperatures can affect the wax and fragrance throw.
What is a 'full melt pool' and why is it important?
A 'full melt pool' means the wax has melted evenly across the entire surface of the candle, reaching the edges of the jar. Achieving this, especially during the first burn, prevents 'tunnelling' (where the wick burns down the middle, leaving solid wax around the edges) and ensures you get the most out of your candle.
What common mistakes should I avoid for safe and enjoyable burning?
Avoid burning your candle all day; this can overheat the jar and cause the wick to shift. Never burn in front of an open window or near curtains, or where pets or small children can reach it. Always remember: never leave a burning candle unattended.
Why does my wick 'mushroom' and how can I fix it?
Wick 'mushrooming' happens when carbon builds up on the wick, often due to burning for too long or not trimming it. To fix this and prevent future issues, simply trim your wick to 5mm before each burn. This ensures a clean, steady flame and reduces soot.
Can I move my candle once it's lit?
It's best to avoid moving a lit candle, especially when it has a significant melt pool. The hot wax can spill, causing a safety hazard, and the movement can disturb the wick, potentially affecting the burn quality. Always let the candle cool and solidify before moving it.
What should I do when my candle is almost finished?
Stop burning your candle when approximately 1cm of wax remains at the bottom of the jar. This prevents the glass from overheating and potentially cracking. Once cooled, you can clean out the remaining wax and repurpose your beautiful Mystique By Lina jar!
